Community/Collage

YOU are invited to participate in a collaborative art project: an ever-expanding ACCORDION BOOK about identity and community!

Here's the idea: Each page will be created by a different artist. Each artist will contribute a collage representing their identity (one side of the page) and a reflection on community (the other side of the page). The two sides of the page can be similar or very different!

This is an ongoing, not-for-profit project that started in the Art community at CSU Northridge and will potentially be exhibited at CSUN and other public spaces, such as galleries, public libraries, and community centers. The scope and content of the book will continue to change with each new showing!

What inspired me to start this? Well, our lives are a kind of COLLAGE. Our identities are made up of so many connections and factors. Our communities are, too. This project is a chance to shine a light on our communities and the ways we support each other!

This project takes letter-size (8.5 x 11 inch) cardstock paper (sturdy 80 to 100 lb. paper, about what you'd expect from greeting cards). Holes will be punched on the left and right edges of every page to bind the pages together in an accordion fold format.

(I can supply design templates in the right sort of cardstock, if you'd like.)

On one side of your page, create a collage that represents how you understand your identity. On the other side, compose a written and/or visual reflection about what community means to you and how you see yourself in community. (Again, the two sides of your page can be similar or they can be quite different!)

You may orient your page in landscape:

Or in portrait:

Just be sure that the bottom edge of your page is FLAT, so that the accordion book can stand up when opened!

You can do cut-outs, pop-ups, different textures, different media, whatever, as long as the paper can support them and bottom of the page is flat. Remember that holes will be punched on either edge!

PS. Do be sure to SIGN your art!
